Indices continue to trade mixed in late morning deals
Sep-30-2026

Indian equity markets continued to trade mixed in late morning deals amid mixed cues from the global markets. Traders were cautious as yields on longer-dated U.S. Treasurys rose, adding to their sharp moves to multi-year highs amid concerns over inflation and central bank monetary policy. The Sensex was up around 0.25%, supported by buying in IT and banking stocks such as ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, TCS, and HCL Technologies. Meanwhile, the Nifty slipped slightly, weighed down by selling in healthcare stocks such as Apollo Hospitals Enterprise and Max Healthcare Institute. Selling pressure in BSE Limited also dragged the index lower. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in green, despite the negative cues from US markets overnight, amid tumbling crude oil prices on easing supply concerns as Saudi Arabia restored half of the capacity of its East-West pipeline.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 72698.66, up by 169.59 points or 0.23% after trading in a range of 72440.05 and 72899.64. There were 17 stocks advancing against 13 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were IT up by 1.10%, Bankex up by 0.93%, Energy up by 0.80%, Oil & Gas up by 0.72% and Telecom up by 0.68%, while Healthcare down by 2.20%, Consumer Durables down by 0.89%, Metal down by 0.65% and Basic Materials down by 0.25%, Capital Goods down by 0.06% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were ICICI Bank up by 2.46%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 2.07%, TCS up by 1.85%, HCL Technologies up by 1.14% and Axis Bank up by 0.94%. On the flip side, Adani Ports down by 2.10%, Eternal down by 2.05%, Sun Pharma down by 2.02%, Bajaj Finserv down by 1.32% and Bajaj Finance down by 0.91% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Narayan Sethuramon, chair of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Trade Policy Council, has said that the implementation of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) marks a great achievement in opening up markets and urged Indian businesses to capitalise on this ‘time-bound’ opportunity.

During his UK and Europe tour last week, which coincided with the 12th anniversary of the Make in India initiative, Sethuramon highlighted the immense potential of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which entered its implementation phase in mid-July.  He said ‘it is very important that we all realise that this FTA opportunity is time-bound. It is not going to last forever.’ He said the government has done a great job by signing FTAs and opening international markets, but there's a need for industry also to respond at a certain pace and take advantage of the India-UK CETA norms.

The India-UK CETA was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UK visit in July 2025 and came into force on July 15, 2026. The FTA is expected to double the current annual bilateral trade levels of 47.9 billion pounds by FY30, unlocking substantial new opportunities for businesses in both markets through substantially lower or zero tariffs across major product segments.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22700.00, down by 16.20 points or 0.07% after trading in a range of 22659.80 and 22771.80. There were 18 stocks advancing against 32 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were ICICI Bank up by 2.61%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 1.98%, TCS up by 1.94%, Coal India up by 1.46% and Tech Mahindra up by 1.41%. On the flip side, Apollo Hospital down by 5.51%, Max Healthcare down by 4.85%, BSE down by 3.54%, Eternal down by 2.42% and Adani Enterprises down by 2.39% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mostly in green; Nikkei 225 surged 1319.73 points or 2.02% to 66,801.00, Taiwan Weighted added 308.17 points or 0.64% to 47,940.13, Jakarta Composite gained 9.19 points or 0.15% to 6,130.89, Shanghai Composite strengthened 14.5 points or 0.38% to 3,844.95 and Hang Seng advanced 14.43 points or 0.06% to 24,538.00.
