Key indices remain in red in late morning deals
Oct-01-2026

Indian equity benchmarks continued trade in red in late morning deals as relentless foreign fund outflows weighed on investors' sentiment. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling spree, offloading equities worth Rs 10,148.41 crore on Wednesday. Traders remained cautious as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that India received 87.4 per cent of its long-period average (LPA) rainfall during the southwest monsoon season from June to September, recording a rainfall deficit of about 13 per cent between June 1 and September 30. The deficit came amid El Nino conditions over the tropical Pacific, which emerged in June and strengthened through the season. However, cooling crude oil prices that traded below the $100 per barrel mark along with softer US inflation data cushioned the fall.

The BSE Sensex was trading with minor cut, weighed down by selling pressure in Auto, Consumer Discretionary and Realty stocks. Similarly, the Nifty 50 was trading with losses of over 0.25%, led by Bajaj Auto falling over 8% following lower than expected September sales. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in green amid easing crude oil prices following reports of improved oil supplies from the West Asia region.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 72422.26, down by 58.03 points or 0.08% after trading in a range of 72187.62 and 72572.90. There were 11 stocks advancing against 19 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were IT up by 1.52%, Telecom up by 1.30%, TECK up by 1.27%, Capital Goods up by 0.44% and Bankex up by 0.37%, while Auto down by 3.01%, Consumer Discretionary down by 1.58%, Realty down by 1.36%, Basic Materials down by 1.31% and Metal down by 0.95% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 3.38%, Infosys up by 1.96%, HCL Technologies up by 1.67%, TCS up by 1.66% and Axis Bank up by 0.88%. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said India received 87.4 per cent of its long-period average (LPA) rainfall during the southwest monsoon season from June to September, recording a rainfall deficit of about 13 per cent between June 1 and September 30. The deficit came amid El Nino conditions over the tropical Pacific, which emerged in June and strengthened through the season.

The IMD said against the normal monsoon rainfall of 868.6 mm, India received 759.4 mm rainfall this year, making it the fourth-lowest monsoon rainfall since 2001. The LPA refers to the average rainfall recorded over a specific region during a particular period, such as a month or season, over a long-term reference period - typically 30 to 50 years.

The IMD also forecast below-normal rainfall for October, with the country expected to receive around 85 per cent of its LPA rainfall for the month. Most parts of India are likely to receive below-normal rainfall during the October-December period, indicating that the rainfall deficit could persist beyond the southwest monsoon season.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22556.95, down by 63.50 points or 0.28% after trading in a range of 22508.05 and 22610.60. There were 15 stocks advancing against 35 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 3.45%, Infosys up by 2.49%, HDFC Life Insurance up by 1.91%, TCS up by 1.69% and HCL Technologies up by 1.49%. On the flip side, Bajaj Auto down by 8.30%, Eicher Motors down by 3.99%, Grasim Industries down by 3.57%, Mahindra & Mahindra down by 2.90% and Ultratech Cement down by 2.67% were the top losers.
