Post Session: Quick Review
Oct-12-2026

Indian equity markets ended significantly lower on Monday as sustained foreign investor outflows weighed on market sentiment. Investors remained cautious ahead of the release of Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based retail inflation data later in the day. Besides, key corporate earnings kept traders on the sidelines.

Both the Sensex and Nifty closed over half a per cent lower as traders booked profits following Friday’s gains. Sentiments remained downbeat amid broad-based selling across sectors, particularly IT and FMCG stocks. Traders remained cautious ahead of the Nifty’s weekly F&O expiry tomorrow.

Some of the important factors in trade:

FIIs remain net sellers: Investors stayed worried amid continued foreign fund outflows and global uncertainties. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling spree, offloading equities worth Rs 3,568.90 crore on Friday.

India forex reserves fall by $12.952 billion to $734.61 billion: Sentiments remained downbeat as the RBI data showed that India's forex reserves dropped by $12.952 billion to $734.606 billion during the week ended October 2. The overall reserves had dropped by $18.343 billion to $747.557 billion in the previous reporting week ended September 25.

RBI unveils regulatory measures for foreign exchange market: Traders took note of the several regulatory measures unveiled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), including restrictions on rebooking of cancelled foreign exchange derivative contracts, reduction in the threshold for undertaking foreign exchange derivative transactions without establishing underlying exposure, and introduction of Foreign Exchange Risk Reserve (FERR).

On the global front: European stocks were trading mostly in green, as investors tracked the situation in oil markets and awaited cues from the third-quarter U.S. earnings season. Asian markets closed mostly in red as traders remain cautious about the developments in the Middle East.

The BSE Sensex ended at 71924.68, down by 547.65 points or 0.76% after trading in a range of 71676.10 and 72884.25. There were 5 stocks advancing against 25 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, with a view to expanding bilateral ties, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Singapore Business Federation (SBF) Chairman Mark Lee in Singapore on October 10, 2026, to discuss strengthening business engagement between the two countries through targeted business matching, trade delegations and cooperation in key sectors.

The Finance Ministry said the discussions focused on facilitating visits by Singaporean business delegations to India to enable meaningful interactions with Indian businesses and state governments, thereby expanding bilateral commercial opportunities. It added that Singapore’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2027 offers an opportunity to build further momentum in bilateral and regional economic cooperation. During the meeting, SBF highlighted potential areas of collaboration, including semiconductor supply chains, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), food security and food processing.

Sitharaman also met Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Deputy Managing Director Leong Sing Chiong. The MAS team presented its approach to tokenisation, including how the authority is fostering the development of the digital asset ecosystem, the ministry said in a separate post. The ministry said the bilateral discussions explored potential efficiency gains from tokenisation, the importance of interoperability and trusted settlement arrangements, and the associated regulatory challenges. It added that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working closely together on these emerging technologies.

The CNX Nifty ended at 22363.35, down by 157.10 points or 0.70% after trading in a range of 22304.45 and 22651.10. There were 13 stocks advancing against 36 stocks declining on the index, while one stock remained unchanged. (Provisional)

Asian markets ended mostly lower on Monday ahead of key US inflation figures this week that could impact expectations for the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy meeting later this month. Meanwhile, regional trading volumes remained thin due to market holidays in Japan. Market sentiments weakened further as crude oil prices hovered above $105 a barrel, despite US President Donald Trump’s weekend announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. South Korea’s Kospi dropped as technology stocks led the decline amid growing concerns over AI valuations. Moreover, Chinese market slipped as Beijing's latest efforts to bolster the stock market failed to overcome broader macroeconomic and geopolitical anxieties.
