Key gauges end lower amid surging oil prices
Oct-12-2026

Indian equity benchmarks erased opening gains and ended over half percent lower on Monday weighed down by selling pressure in FMCG, TECK and IT stocks. Besides, a fresh spike in crude oil prices, unabated foreign fund outflows and rising bond yields dented investors' sentiment. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 3,568.90 crore on Friday, according to exchange data.

Some of the important factors in trade:

Finance Minister discusses business cooperation, trade ties with Singapore: With a view to expanding bilateral ties, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Singapore Business Federation (SBF) Chairman Mark Lee in Singapore, to discuss strengthening business engagement between the two countries through targeted business matching, trade delegations and cooperation in key sectors.

Japan emerges as India’s biggest FDI source in Q1FY27: The data released by the government has showed that Japan has emerged as the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India during Q1FY27. FDI inflows from Japan stood at $5.71 billion in Q1FY27, surpassing the $3.74 billion India received from the country during the entire 2025-26 fiscal year.

India must cut SLR to boost job-intensive manufacturing: Former NITI Aayog chief executive Amitabh Kant has called for a reduction in the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) to boost job-intensive manufacturing. He described the production-linked incentive (PLI) as a short-term solution for the manufacturing sector.

Global front: European markets were trading higher with investors assessing the Middle East situation and tracking oil prices and bond yields movements. Asian markets ended mostly lower due to worsening investor sentiment in the semiconductor sector on growing concerns over the AI industry in the U.S.

Finally, the BSE Sensex fell 547.65 points or 0.76% to 71,924.68 and the CNX Nifty was down by 157.10 points or 0.70% to 22,363.35.

Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that the trade agreement between India and the United States (US) will be finalised considering changing circumstances since two countries announced a framework for an interim pact in February. He said India is also negotiating trade agreements with several countries and regional blocs, including Israel, Chile, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). He added that India is seeking lower tariffs for its goods in the US market than its competitors.

The minister did not elaborate on the changed circumstances, but the changing tariff landscape in the US has led to further negotiations on the first phase of the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Earlier this month, Goyal met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of G20 trade mister meeting in Milwaukee, where the two sides discussed trade pact-related issues.

Goyal said that negotiations for a trade pact with Canada are progressing at a faster pace and talks for an agreement with South Africa-led SACU group is expected to begin soon. He said several countries are keen to negotiate trade agreements with India, and added that talks with Mexico will be launched next week. He further said that the trade ministers of the UK and Canada will be visiting India next week. India and the UK implemented a trade agreement in July. He said the UK minister will be here for the India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting.

Asian markets ended mostly lower on Monday ahead of key US inflation figures this week that could impact expectations for the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy meeting later this month. Meanwhile, regional trading volumes remained thin due to market holidays in Japan. Market sentiments weakened further as crude oil prices hovered above $105 a barrel, despite US President Donald Trump’s weekend announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. South Korea’s Kospi dropped as technology stocks led the decline amid growing concerns over AI valuations. Moreover, Chinese market slipped as Beijing's latest efforts to bolster the stock market failed to overcome broader macroeconomic and geopolitical anxieties.
