Sensex, Nifty extend opening gains in early deals on value buying
Oct-13-2026

Indian equity benchmarks made flat-to-positive start on Tuesday and soon extended their gains as crude oil prices edged lower, after climbing by nearly $2 a barrel in the previous session, as traders assessed supply risks from attacks on Saudi Arabia while weighing the prospect of additional diesel supplies from Russia.

Sensex and Nifty were trading notably higher with gains of 0.76% each in early deals as investors focused on the buying momentum in the heavyweight IT stocks post HCL Tech’s Q2 earnings. The company reported a 21.18% rise in its consolidated net profit at Rs 5,132 crore for Q2FY27, as compared to Rs 4,235 crore for the same quarter in the previous year. Though, there was some cautiousness as a faster-than-expected rise in retail inflation added to concerns over further interest rate hikes. India's retail inflation accelerated to 5.54 per cent in September.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly lower as investors weighed the geopolitical developments in West Asia and Russia-Ukraine.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 72468.57, up by 543.89 points or 0.76% after trading in a range of 71703.56 and 72491.64. There were 23 stocks advancing against 7 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were IT up by 2.38%, TECK up by 1.75%, Realty up by 1.26%, FMCG up by 0.84% and Bankex up by 0.68%, while Power down by 0.77%, Capital Goods down by 0.70%, Telecom down by 0.67%, Industrials down by 0.56% and Healthcare down by 0.50% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were TCS up by 3.61%, HCL Technologies up by 3.52%, Tech Mahindra up by 1.65%, Trent up by 1.51% and HDFC Bank up by 1.49%. On the flip side, NTPC down by 1.16%, Power Grid down by 0.90%, Kotak Mahindra Bank down by 0.68%, Maruti Suzuki India down by 0.51% and Larsen & Toubro down by 0.17% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its October World Economic Outlook (WEO), has revised upward India’s economic growth projection by 60 basis points (bps) to 7.0% for the fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27) and by 30 bps to 7.0% for FY28, compared with its July 2026 WEO update. It highlighted that India remains among the fastest-growing major economies, adding that the country’s growth remained robust despite higher oil prices.

According to the October WEO, the growth reflects stronger-than-expected momentum, supported by resilient domestic demand and robust services activity. The IMF noted that India stands out with upward revisions, reflecting sustained momentum and growing evidence of stronger growth potential, supported by favourable demographic dynamics, a large and expanding domestic market, and continued structural reforms.

Meanwhile, China’s economic growth is projected to slow to 4.5% in 2026, as higher global oil prices, prolonged uncertainty, and structural headwinds are expected to weigh on economic activity. Policy support is expected to prevent a sharper slowdown.

In the United States, economic growth is projected at 2.3% in both 2026 and 2027. The projection for 2026 is unchanged from April, while the forecast for 2027 has been revised upward by 20 bps. Economic activity is supported by robust private consumption, fiscal policy, accommodative financial conditions, continued technology-related business investment (net of its substantial import content), and strong productivity. The country’s status as a net energy exporter is expected to limit the war’s direct impact on its economy.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22532.90, up by 169.55 points or 0.76% after trading in a range of 22288.45 and 22543.05. There were 43 stocks advancing against 7 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were TCS up by 4.83%, HCL Technologies up by 4.50%, Nestle India up by 1.99%, Tech Mahindra up by 1.79% and Bajaj Auto up by 1.67%. On the flip side, NTPC down by 0.89%, Max Healthcare down by 0.73%, Kotak Mahindra Bank down by 0.50%, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles down by 0.44% and Power Grid down by 0.38% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mostly in red; Nikkei 225 slipped 1463.92 points or 2.12% to 67,567.00, Taiwan Weighted lost 929.75 points or 1.89% to 48,372.21, KOSPI dropped 394.02 points or 6.17% to 5,990.22, Hang Seng declined 106.2 points or 0.44% to 24,165.00, Jakarta Composite plunged 27.39 points or 0.46% to 5,908.76 and Shanghai Composite weakened 10.08 points or 0.27% to 3,787.16, while Straits Times rose 16.71 points or 0.31% to 5,436.54.
