Sensex, Nifty trade slightly higher in early deals; WPI data eyed
Oct-14-2026

Indian equity benchmarks made a cautious start on Wednesday as elevated oil prices weighed on sentiment. Oil prices rose as traders weighed supply risks from fighting between Yemen's Iran-allied Houthis and Saudi Arabia against the prospect of increased diesel supplies from Russia. Traders adopted a wait-and-watch approach ahead of the release of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data for September later in the day.

Sensex and Nifty soon gained some ground and were trading in green with divergent trends in early deals. Sensex garnered 0.13% on account of buying in IT and Teck stocks. On the other hand, Nifty traded marginally higher with gains of 0.04%. Selling in financial and healthcare stocks capped the gains. Some cautiousness came as Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers of domestic stocks for the 13th consecutive session on Tuesday, recording outflows of around Rs 1,305 crore.

On the global front, most of the Asian markets were trading higher boosted by a rebound in technology and semiconductor stocks in Japan and South Korea after the recent sharp sell-off.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 73128.38, up by 94.60 points or 0.13% after trading in a range of 72894.41 and 73178.98. There were 15 stocks advancing against 15 stocks declining on the index.

Meanwhile, with an aim of boosting trade, India and Canada have discussed expediting negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which seeks to provide deeper market access for each other’s goods and services. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions with his Canadian counterpart, Maninder Sidhu. Goyal said the focus is on a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement that enhances market access and unlocks new trade and investment opportunities.

He expressed confidence that the CEPA would give fresh momentum to bilateral trade and strengthen the economic partnership for shared prosperity. A CEPA is a type of free trade agreement under which two trading partners significantly reduce or eliminate import duties on a wide range of goods traded between them. It also eases norms to promote trade in services and investment.

The meeting assumes significance as chief negotiators from both countries concluded the fifth round of negotiations on the pact in Canada on October 9, 2026. Both sides aim to conclude the negotiations by the end of this year. Bilateral trade in goods declined around 8 per cent to $7.95 billion in 2025-26 from over $8 in 2024-25.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22732.15, up by 10.20 points or 0.04% after trading in a range of 22663.80 and 22752.30. There were 24 stocks advancing against 26 stocks declining on the index.
