Key gauges trade flat in morning deals
Oct-14-2026

Indian equity benchmarks were trading flat in morning deals as elevated US Treasury yields and crude prices kept sentiment cautious. Some concern also came as foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling streak, offloading equities worth Rs 1,305.13 crore on Tuesday. Traders also adopted a wait-and-watch approach ahead of the release of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data for September. Meanwhile, India and Canada have discussed expediting negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which seeks to provide deeper market access for each other’s goods and services. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions with his Canadian counterpart, Maninder Sidhu.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in green boosted by a rebound in technology and semiconductor stocks in Japan and South Korea after the recent sharp sell-off.

Meanwhile, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister P K Mishra has said that India requires a modern, reliable and technology-driven statistical system to support evidence-based policymaking and achieve its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He called for robust statistical institutions at the state level, greater collaboration between the Centre and states, and better integration of data systems.

He said India’s statistical systems must evolve alongside an economy that is becoming increasingly digital, formalised and interconnected. He noted the introduction of a new National Accounts Series with 2022-23 as the base year, alongside updated Consumer Price Index and Index of Industrial Production series, would help align economic measurement with changing realities.

Moreover, he highlighted the role of artificial intelligence, machine learning, geospatial systems and satellite imagery in improving the timeliness and accuracy of official statistics. But he cautioned that technology cannot compensate for poor-quality data, stressing that speed must not come at the expense of accuracy and wider data access must not compromise confidentiality.

He said that India’s development priorities demand more granular data at the state, district and local levels, rather than depending solely on national averages. Robust statistical frameworks would help governments assess policy outcomes, identify regional disparities and ensure public spending delivers intended results. He called for close collaboration among MoSPI, state statistical offices, finance and planning departments, NITI Aayog and academic institutions to build a trusted, transparent and interoperable statistical architecture to guide India's development through 2047.
