Indian markets exhibit mixed performance amid higher WPI inflation
Oct-14-2026

In a highly volatile session, Indian equity benchmarks were trading mixed in early afternoon session, after India's wholesale price index (WPI) inflation rose significantly in the month of September 2026 to 11.39 per cent, as compared to 9.92 per cent in August 2026, due to a sharp rise in fuel and power, food and manufactured product prices. The index for All Commodities for September 2026 stands at 112.5, whereas it was 110.8 in August 2026.

While Sensex attempted to hold its ground, Nifty faced selling pressure. Rising crude oil prices and continued foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows weighed on the domestic sentiments, while gains in information technology stocks were providing some support. Investors remained watchful of corporate earnings and global developments before taking fresh positions.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mixed, after China's consumer price inflation rose slightly in September driven by higher fuel prices and producer price inflation hit the highest level in more than four years. Consumer prices rose 0.9 percent in September from a year ago, slightly faster than the 0.8 percent increase seen in August.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 73064.06, up by 30.28 points or 0.04% after trading in a range of 72888.72 and 73195.26. There were 14 stocks advancing against 16 stocks declining on the index.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said the rupee has depreciated ‘significantly’ over the past year and a half, and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will continue to take action to prevent excessive volatility in the rupee exchange rate. She said domestic currency has reached a low against the US dollar mainly due to global uncertainties, despite India's strong macro-economic fundamentals with healthy foreign exchange reserves. She added that the regulator RBI is also taking efforts through its regulatory powers to ensure the domestic currency stays stable.

On the potential rationalisation of the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) and long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax, the minister said the debate around STT and LTCG tax rationalisation is ‘healthy’, and she will ‘keenly’ hear these debates. She said ‘we are very close to the Budget, and the preparation for the Budget has started. It may not be the best time for me to say what I will or what I will not consider.’ She further said that the long-term capital gains tax is something on which a lot of people have been commenting, and the issue also came up during her conversation with investors in India and abroad.

Talking about investment by the private sector, Sitharaman said, domestic private capital is flowing into India, while the country is also attracting investment from abroad. Investments are coming into sectors such as renewable energy, semiconductors and chip design, biosimilars, pharmaceuticals, generic drug manufacturing and aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centres. She added that these are among the sectors that are attracting private capital, whether from companies expanding their core businesses or those entering new areas.
