Polls in 5 states: Election Commission team in Manipur to review preparedness
Oct-21-2026

A team of senior Election Commission officials is in Manipur to review preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections, which are expected to be held early next year in five states. The Election Commission proposes to conduct Assembly elections in Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa early next year. The team, led by senior deputy election commissioners, is visiting poll-bound states ahead of a subsequent visit by the full Election Commission before the announcement of the election schedule.

The commission has already conducted a review visit to Uttarakhand, while a review visit to Punjab is scheduled for October 28. Although a field visit to Goa was also planned, the dates for that tour are being rescheduled. The schedule for the officials’ visit to Uttar Pradesh has not yet been announced. The term of the Uttar Pradesh assembly ends on May 22 next year, while the terms for the 60-member Manipur assembly, the 40-member Goa assembly, the 117-member Punjab assembly, and the 70-member Uttarakhand Assembly conclude on various dates in March 2027.

Recently, when announcing the annual special summary revision in 17 states and Union Territories (UTs), the Election Commission informed the chief electoral officers of these states that elections in the five mentioned states are due ‘early next year.’ The final electoral rolls will be published on January 4 in the 17 states and UTs. Under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the Election Commission can conduct elections earlier than six months before the expiry of an Assembly’s term.
