Post Session: Quick Review
Oct-22-2026

Indian equity markets remained under pressure on Thursday, with the Sensex and Nifty extending their losing streak to three consecutive sessions amid broad-based selling across major sectors and escalating tensions in West Asia. However, the losses were limited by a positive turnaround in foreign institutional investors (FIIs) flows, as FIIs emerged as net buyers on Wednesday, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,022.32 crore.

Some of the important factors in trade:

Nine key infrastructure sectors’ output growth rises to 7.9% in September: Traders overlooked the Ministry of Commerce & Industry’s latest data showing that nine key infrastructure sectors’ output growth increased to 7.9% in September 2026 against 3.1% in the year-ago month driven by strong performance of iron ore, electricity and cement segments.

India, New Zealand advance trade facilitation through new MoC: Traders paid no heed to India and New Zealand signing a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) concerning the Electronic Origin Data Exchange for Trade in Goods.

Goyal to visit Germany, Netherlands to boost trade ties, investments: Traders took note that Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will visit the Germany and Netherlands from October 22-27 and discuss ways to improve trade and investments between India and these nations.

On the global front: European stocks were trading in red as escalating tension in Middle East spiked up global crude oil prices. Asian stock markets are trading mostly lower, despite the positive cues from US markets overnight.

The BSE Sensex ended at 73249.39, down by 460.30 points or 0.62% after trading in a range of 73005.11 and 73720.83. There were 8 stocks advancing against 22 stocks declining on the index.

The only gaining sectoral index on the BSE was Healthcare up by 0.02%, while FMCG down by 1.41%, Capital Goods down by 1.34%, Industrials down by 1.33%, Energy down by 1.16%, and Power down by 1.10% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Ultratech Cement up by 1.25%, Bajaj Finance up by 1.21%, ICICI Bank up by 0.82%, Bharti Airtel up by 0.64% and Larsen & Toubro up by 0.42%. On the flip side, Eternal down by 2.20%, Trent down by 2.09%, Tech Mahindra down by 2.09%, Bharat Electronics down by 1.91% and HDFC Bank down by 1.90% were the top losers. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, Union Minister Piyush Goyal has said that the commerce ministry is working with state governments to organise a series of free trade agreement (FTA) outreach initiatives across the country, to help every state unlock its unique export potential, ensure greater utilisation of these FTAs and give fresh momentum to India's export growth.

The minister said the multiple FTAs concluded in recent years have opened up immense opportunities for India’s exporters. He said ‘the government's focus is on ensuring these benefits reach our farmers, workers, women, youth, MSMEs and small businesses, enabling them to take more 'Made in India' products to global markets.’ In the last five years, India has implemented free trade agreements with the UAE, Mauritius, Australia, Oman, EFTA bloc, the UK and New Zealand.

The CNX Nifty ended at 22687.65, down by 123.70 points or 0.54% after trading in a range of 22554.85 and 22785.00. There were 14 stocks advancing against 36 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gainers on Nifty were Bajaj Finance up by 1.74%, Cipla up by 1.29%, Ultratech Cement up by 1.00%, ICICI Bank up by 0.97% and Bajaj Auto up by 0.82%. On the flip side, Nestle India down by 2.78%, Eternal down by 2.53%, HDFC Life Insurance down by 2.09%, Tata Motors Passenger down by 2.07% and Reliance Industries down by 2.03% were the top losers. (Provisional)

European markets were trading lower; France’s CAC fell 122.68 points or 1.55% to 7,799.00, Germany’s DAX lost 301.94 points or 1.18% to 25,343.10 and UK’s FTSE 100 decreased 64.5 points or 0.6% to 10,688.38.

Asian markets settled mostly lower on Thursday as renewed concerns over the profitability of debt-backed AI infrastructure investment, combined with surging Brent crude oil prices above $112 per barrel following drone attacks in Saudi Arabia exacerbated investor caution. Meanwhile, investors awaited cues from central bank meetings in Japan, Canada, the United States and Europe, due next week. Hong Kong and Chinese markets fell sharply due to fading expectations for aggressive new economic stimulus from Beijing.
