Post Session: Quick Review
Oct-29-2026

Indian equity markets staged a strong rebound on Thursday, with the Sensex and Nifty recovering sharply to end higher after recent losses, amid easing crude oil prices and positive cues from European markets. After a cautious start, indices surged and maintained their gaining rally till the end of the session, as market participants drew some comfort from the US Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged.

Some of the important factors in trade:

India stays on path of fiscal consolidation: Poonam Gupta, Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that India has stayed on the path of fiscal consolidation, even as deficits and debt have risen in many other countries. Its general-government debt is projected to decline by about 9 percentage points of GDP by 2031-32, and it faces neither rollover risk nor runaway risk.

Goyal calls for greater export competitiveness, market diversification: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has interacted with representatives of Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) in New Delhi to review the prevailing export scenario, discuss emerging opportunities and challenges in international trade, and deliberate on measures to further strengthen India’s export competitiveness.

AEPC calls for diversifying India’s export base: Apparel exporters body Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has called for diversifying India’s export base, highlighting that nearly 88 per cent of the country’s exports originate from just 100 districts. It also urged the exporters to increase utilisation of India's expanding network of free trade agreements (FTAs).

Mixed global cues: European markets were trading higher. Asian markets ended lower, even after Hong Kong's foreign trade deficit decreased in September from a year ago as exports grew faster than imports. The trade shortfall narrowed to HK$46.3 billion in September from HK$50.2 billion in the same month last year. In August, the trade balance showed a deficit of HK$71.2 billion.

The BSE Sensex ended at 74151.04, up by 905.01 points or 1.24% after trading in a range of 73181.90 and 74166.16. There were 23 stocks advancing against 7 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Utilities up by 3.11%, Realty up by 2.44%, FMCG up by 1.94%, Power up by 1.63% and PSU up by 1.60%, while Auto down by 0.18% was the only losing index on BSE. (Provisional)

The top gainers on the Sensex were Adani Ports & SEZ up by 5.93%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 4.05%, Power Grid up by 3.82%, Eternal up by 3.64% and NTPC up by 2.93%. On the flip side, Asian Paints down by 2.07%, Trent down by 1.49%, Maruti Suzuki India down by 0.65%, Tech Mahindra down by 0.48% and HDFC Bank down by 0.39% were the top losers. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, with an aim to boost domestic container manufacturing, curb import dependence and enhance supply-chain resilience, the Union Cabinet has approved the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS) with budgetary outlay of Rs 10,000 crore upto FY 2039-40. The scheme is intended to support new manufacturing facilities as well as expansion of existing container manufacturing units. The Scheme for Container Manufacturing was announced in the Union Budget for 2026-27.

The scheme comprises three major components. The Interest Subvention Assistance (ISA), with a financial outlay of Rs 859 crore to provide Interest subvention of 3% per annum on eligible term loans (capital loans) availed by container manufacturers for setting up of greenfield container manufacturing facilities and Brownfield expansion of existing container manufacturing capacities.

The Operational Expenditure Assistance (OEA), with a financial outlay of Rs 8,891 crore to provide financial assistance for all containers manufactured as per global shipping standards and sold by eligible container manufacturers. This would help bridge the cost gap and improve the competitiveness of domestically manufactured containers. Testing and certification assistance with a financial outlay of Rs 150 crore to support setting up of common facilities such as Dynamic longitudinal impact testing etc.

The CNX Nifty ended at 22936.75, up by 237.90 points or 1.05% after trading in a range of 22656.75 and 22961.95. There were 39 stocks advancing against 11 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gainers on Nifty were Adani Ports & SEZ up by 6.29%, Adani Enterprises up by 5.17%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 4.32%, Eternal up by 3.63% and Power Grid up by 3.42%. On the flip side, Trent down by 1.79%, Maruti Suzuki India down by 1.32%, Bajaj Auto down by 0.97%, SBI Life Insurance down by 0.88% and Eicher Motors down by 0.85% were the top losers. (Provisional)

European markets were trading higher; UK’s FTSE 100 increased 34.71 points or 0.32% to 10,729.21, France’s CAC rose 76.84 points or 0.97% to 7,963.80 and Germany’s DAX gained 242.18 points or 0.94% to 25,946.20.

Asian markets settled mostly lower on Thursday as investors braced for the release of the September US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data. Investors were also turned their focus to the Bank of Japan’s upcoming policy meeting, where officials are widely expected to maintain current interest rates while potentially signalling a rate hike in December amid persistent inflationary pressures. Market sentiment was weakened further by a major sell-off in technology shares, triggered by a 10% plunge in Alphabet's after-hours trading due to massive artificial intelligence infrastructure spending, which overshadowed a steady interest rate decision from the US Federal Reserve. South Korea’s Kospi dropped after Samsung Electronics delivered weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings. However, fresh diplomatic efforts between regional Middle Eastern powers to avoid an escalation between the United States and Iran limited the declines.
