Key gauges end with strong gains amid easing crude prices
Oct-29-2026

Indian equity benchmarks ended with strong gains on Thursday, with the benchmark indices rallying over a percent each, amid broad-based buying across sectors, barring auto stocks. Sentiment was supported after the U.S. Federal Reserve held interest rates steady, as widely expected, and oil prices eased following fresh diplomatic efforts to end the war in the Middle East.

Some of the important factors in trade:

India, Liechtenstein discuss investment under EFTA TEPA: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met Liechtenstein's Hereditary Prince Alois to discuss strengthening economic ties and exploring investment opportunities under the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).

India stays on path of fiscal consolidation: Poonam Gupta, Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that India has stayed on the path of fiscal consolidation, even as deficits and debt have risen in many other countries. Its general-government debt is projected to decline by about 9 percentage points of GDP by 2031-32, and it faces neither rollover risk nor runaway risk.

Cabinet approves Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme: The Union Cabinet has approved the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS) with budgetary outlay of Rs 10,000 crore upto FY 2039-40 envisages to establish a globally competitive container manufacturing ecosystem in India, reduce import dependence and strengthen supply-chain resilience.

Indian aviation industry faces Rs 38,000 crore losses: Ratings agency ICRA said the Indian aviation industry is expected to post net losses of Rs 36,000-38,000 crore in the current fiscal, compared to estimated net losses of Rs 28,000-30,000 crore in the previous year.

Global front: Asian markets settled mostly lower as investors braced for the release of the September US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data. European markets were trading higher as investors reacted to the U.S. Federal Reserve's widely expected decision to hold rates unchanged and awaited the outcome of an ECB policy meeting later in the day.

Finally, the BSE Sensex rose 905.01 points or 1.24% to 74,151.04 and the CNX Nifty was up by 237.90 points or 1.05% to 22,936.75.

The BSE Sensex touched high and low of 74,166.16 and 73,181.90, respectively. There were 26 stocks advancing against 4 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Utilities up by 3.11%, Realty up by 2.44%, FMCG up by 1.94%, Power up by 1.63% and PSU up by 1.60%, while Auto down by 0.18% was the lone losing index on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Adani Ports & SEZ up by 6.26%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 4.33%, Power Grid up by 4.20%, Eternal up by 3.81% and NTPC up by 3.39%. On the flip side, Asian Paints down by 1.59%, Trent down by 1.53%, Maruti Suzuki India down by 0.95%, Tech Mahindra down by 0.42% and HCL Technologies down by 0.37% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Poonam Gupta, Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that India has stayed on the path of fiscal consolidation, even as deficits and debt have risen in many other countries. Its general-government debt is projected to decline by about 9 percentage points of GDP by 2031-32, and it faces neither rollover risk nor runaway risk.

On the growth front, she said India stands out. It is the fastest-growing large economy, and unlike the emerging market and developing economies (EMDE) aggregate, its growth projection has been revised up over the past year. That growth has rested more on domestic sources lately, particularly private consumption and public investment, but new drivers have emerged, including private investment and merchandise exports.

On the inflation front, RBI Deputy Governor noted that India’s track record on inflation over the last ten years has been equally credible. Since the adoption of flexible inflation targeting, inflation has declined structurally, has remained within the tolerance band in most years, and has become less volatile. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and the RBI remain committed to the inflation-targeting framework.

Apart from this, she also highlighted that India’s financial sector is on a strong footing. Banks’ capital adequacy is at 17.7 per cent and the gross NPA ratio at a multi-decadal low of 1.8 per cent, and stress tests show that banks would remain well capitalised even under severe scenarios. Further she said ‘We nevertheless remain watchful of spillovers from global financial markets, as well as of cyber and climate risks.’

CNX Nifty touched high and low of 22,961.95 and 22,656.75, respectively. There were 39 stocks advancing against 11 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Adani Ports & SEZ up by 6.29%, Adani Enterprises up by 5.17%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 4.32%, Eternal up by 3.63% and Power Grid up by 3.42%. On the flip side, Trent down by 1.79%, Maruti Suzuki India down by 1.32%, Bajaj Auto down by 0.97%, SBI Life Insurance down by 0.88% and Eicher Motors down by 0.85% were the top losers.

European markets were trading higher; UK’s FTSE 100 increased 32.49 points or 0.3% to 10,726.99, France’s CAC rose 69.34 points or 0.88% to 7,956.30 and Germany’s DAX gained 226.98 points or 0.88% to 25,931.00.

Asian markets settled mostly lower on Thursday as investors braced for the release of the September US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data. Investors were also turned their focus to the Bank of Japan’s upcoming policy meeting, where officials are widely expected to maintain current interest rates while potentially signalling a rate hike in December amid persistent inflationary pressures. Market sentiment was weakened further by a major sell-off in technology shares, triggered by a 10% plunge in Alphabet's after-hours trading due to massive artificial intelligence infrastructure spending, which overshadowed a steady interest rate decision from the US Federal Reserve. South Korea’s Kospi dropped after Samsung Electronics delivered weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings. However, fresh diplomatic efforts between regional Middle Eastern powers to avoid an escalation between the United States and Iran limited the declines.
