Post Session: Quick Review
Oct-30-2026

Indian equity markets garnered notable gains during the last trading session of the week, with both Sensex and Nifty closing above their neutral lines. After trading cautiously in early deals, indices gained momentum in noon deals, but failed to hold it till the end of the session, as elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and mixed global market cues remained concerns for the traders. Also, foreign fund outflows weighed slightly on market sentiments. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equites worth Rs 943.60 crore on October 29.

Some of the important factors in trade:

India’s growth momentum holds firm, but inflation and external risks persist: The Finance Ministry, in its October Monthly Economic Review, has said that India’s economic activity continued to expand in the July-September quarter (Q2) of the current fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27), with GDP growth estimated at 7.35 per cent, following stronger-than-expected real GDP growth of 7.8 per cent in Q1 FY27.

India on track to achieve $1 trillion exports target in FY27 despite geopolitical uncertainties: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has expressed confidence that India is on track to achieve its ambitious $1 trillion exports target in the current financial year (FY27), despite geopolitical uncertainties and disruptions to global trade arising from the West Asia crisis and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

2026 could be deemed as inflection point for India, focus should be on building domestic capabilities: At a time when India is facing global shocks and supply-side disruptions, Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran has said that the year 2026 resembles 1991 and it could be deemed as an inflection point for the economy.

Mixed global cues: European markets were trading mostly in green, while Asian markets settled mostly lower on Friday, with tech and semiconductor shares falling amid ongoing AI-related concerns. Besides, the Bank of Japan left its key interest rate unchanged on Friday after a hike last month as underlying inflation is assessed to be consistent with the 2 percent inflation target. The policy board, governed by Ueda Kazu, voted 8-1 in favor of holding the interest rate at 1.25 percent, the highest since 1995.

The BSE Sensex ended at 74459.53, up by 308.49 points or 0.42% after trading in a range of 74082.03 and 74742.59. There were 19 stocks advancing against 11 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

On the flip side, State Bank of India down by 1.96%, Mahindra & Mahindra down by 1.68%, Axis Bank down by 1.19%, Ultratech Cement down by 1.18% and Adani Ports & SEZ down by 0.95% were the top losers. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, S Mahendra Dev, chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), has said that in the coming years, the government should support job-creating labour-intensive sectors and frontier industries, and support to them should be well-designed, linked to clear goals, and reviewed regularly.

He emphasised the need to enhance the competitiveness of firms across the board, noting that Atmanirbhar Bharat does not mean India is going back to the pre-1991 era. He highlighted that Textiles, apparel, footwear, and food processing can create employment on a large scale, while semiconductors, electronics components, advanced materials, and clean technologies can build India's technological strength.

Further, he said it is basically the competitiveness and the quality of the products that ‘we should increase.’ he noted ‘Support for these industries should be well-designed, linked to clear goals, and reviewed regularly so that public resources achieve the greatest impact.’

The CNX Nifty ended at 23053.10, up by 116.35 points or 0.51% after trading in a range of 22905.10 and 23118.10. There were 29 stocks advancing against 21 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

European markets were trading mostly in green; UK’s FTSE 100 increased 16.23 points or 0.15% to 10,738.30 and France’s CAC rose 2.9 points or 0.04% to 7,972.90, while Germany’s DAX lost 130.78 points or 0.5% to 25,908.90.

Asian markets settled mostly lower on Friday, driven by a massive global selloff in artificial intelligence and technology shares that rattled investor confidence after Google parent Alphabet burnt through cash last quarter, Amazon signalled higher capital expenditures next year atop an already huge amount in 2026, and Intel warned about a faltering PC market. Market sentiment weakened further, mirroring Wall Street's fall overnight. South Korea’s Kospi tumbled after Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix faced heavy selling pressure amid artificial intelligence-linked woes. Japanese markets slumped as the yen strengthened after the Bank of Japan held rates steady at 1.25%, in line with market expectations. In contrast, Hong Kong markets bucked the trend and gained, rebounding ahead of the Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit opening next week.
