Sonia Gandhi, Ashwini Vaishnaw, among 14 sworn in as RS members

Fourteen people, including former Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, today took oath as Rajya Sabha (RS) members. Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath of office to 14 leaders in the new Parliament house building.

Sonia Gandhi took oath as a member of the Upper House from Rajasthan, left vacant by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's retirement. Meanwhile, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha from Odisha. Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Syed Naseer Hussain from Karnataka, BJP leader RPN Singh from Uttar Pradesh and BJP member from West Bengal Samik Bhattacharya were among the 14 people who took oath in the Rajya Sabha.

Sonia Gandhi has become a Rajya Sabha member for the first time. She has opted for a seat in Rajya Sabha, giving up contesting the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Sonia Gandhi took oath in the presence of Leader of the House Piyush Goyal and Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. Her daughter and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also present during the ceremony. The Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to take place in seven phases, beginning from April 19.
