Will not accept CAA, NRC, Uniform Civil Code: Mamata Banerjee
Apr-11-2024

TMC Supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she will not allow implementation of the CAA, NRC and the Uniform Civil Code in the state.

Mamata Banerjee made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Kolkata on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Banerjee said, ‘We are ready to shed blood for the country but will not tolerate torture for the country. UCC is not acceptable. I want harmony in all religions. Your safety. Your life. We will not accept CAA, NRC or UCC’. She claimed that some people will try to ‘engineer riots’ during elections and urged those who participated in the programme ‘not to fall prey to the plot’. She also accused the BJP of personally calling Muslim leaders and seeking their support in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

TMC chief also slammed the BJP alleging the use of central probe agencies to intimidate and ‘scare’ opposition as elections draw near. She further promised to fight against such tactics and affirmed protection of the country’s unity, rejecting any oppression of the opposition. Asserting peace and brotherhood among different communities in Bengal, she asserted that her party TMC's fight is against the BJP. TMC national general secretary and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee accompanied her at the Eid meet.

The Narendra Modi-led Centre announced the implementation of the CAA earlier this year. In addition, the UCC has been on the BJP's agenda for a long time
